I recall some time ago that Albert9x19 had released some documentation detailing the process and chemistry behind synthesizing double-base smokeless powder at home. I can't seem to find the recipes anywhere though. Anyone know where they might be? I didn't see it on the index.

Smokeless requires some dangerous chemistry, nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin are sensitive, more than you'd think. I would start with production and storage of those before you even consider trying smokeless. If you can make, test, and store those, you'll be fine. The rest of the process is just stabilizing it.

edit: if you live in a place that you can buy smokeless, just buy it. The juice ain't worth the squeeze.

Nitrocellulose is extremely flammable, but so is commercial smokeless. Nitroglycerin is so sensitive it will go boom boom if you sneeze too hard.

As lame (and dangerous) as this suggestion might sound veritasium released a video a few days ago about Alferd Nobel. In it is EVERYTHING you need on how to make it, including safety warnings. It’s a pretty fun watch. Hopefully, it hasn’t been censored since release.

Edit: the only part he glances over is the recipe for nitrocellulose, which, having made it is probably the easiest part.

I don't believe Albert ever actually released his work and it's not clear it's actually being actively worked on any longer.

I do think that @notsuspekt is correct that if you want the recipe for practical purposes, and you're in the US, it makes little sense to DIY it. But I do think it's a worthy area of research and I'd like to see someone revive the project.

Hello everyone, I once read a kind of "recipe," but haven't tried it myself yet. This recipe is more about reducing the burn rate of nitrocellulose by adding two components so that it can be used as smokeless powder for pistol ammunition. But as I mentioned, I haven't tried it myself. Use at your own risk! Here the "recipe":

"crude yet somewhat effective. its my first attempt, it works OK but is a little too dirty still since I added to much graphite. I will try again soon.

10 gram nitrocellulose powder ; 5ml ad blue/urea ; 0.5 gram graphite powder

The powder was first dissolved in acetone then the urea and graphite where added and mixed in, it was left to dry then powdered. if attempting then add waaayyy less graphite, maybe around 0.2 / 0.1 gram instead."

How does one make nitrocellulose into a powder?

Not exactly sure why everyone always lists nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin as primary examples, if you're wanting to reload pistol cartridges, potassium or sodium chlorate are fine for that, I've reloaded 9mm cartridges with similar standard velocities seen from manufacturers. Theres's hundreds of ways going about it though, double displacement, filtering from match heads, or electrolysis. I plan on eventually making a guide for it, but ive been busy with bullshit. Would like to take the 43R and convert it to 410 considering anything other than shotgun in my opinion for self-defense by those who cant arm themselves legally seems to be otherwise entirely useless.
