$20 is a hard ask, but 10/22 hybrids like the Decimator or the Galileo R2 are perfect. You need a bolt and mags, preferably you'd throw a real barrel in as well but the proto-barrel can be substituted.

It's worth it though, after you move to decent rifle cartridges it becomes a viable means of defense.

Hitchhiker is one of the cheapest 22lr builds but the hardware from MAF, including the barrel, is still $80.
I was just looking at that one. Since I have barrel material it'd only be $50. But any $50 I get right now is going towards the debt.
Think I'll try a Songbird, even though it has the heavy trigger pull. Wonder how difficult it would be to modify the breech to accept a drilled-out dime?
