As a person that doesn't own a gun is, is it often that you're taking the bolt carrier group out of a gun when you're not cleaning it? I would think you would just leave it in the gun and take it out when you're cleaning it.
Often you have multiple bolt carrier groups (BCGs) some perform different functions.
For example, the lower BCG you see in the attached image is specifically designed to accept a completely different calibre bullet.
